The Ember Awakening The Elder Realm Codex
The first thing the young man noticed was the silence. Not the peaceful kind—the kind that pressed against his ears until he became aware of his own breathing. One moment he’d been sitting at his desk, the glow of his monitor reflecting off half-finished notes and an untouched cup of coffee. The next, the room was gone. No walls. No floor. No sky. Just a vast, dark expanse lit by drifting embers. They floated like fireflies made of ash, glowing orange and red as they passed him. He reached out instinctively, his fingers brushing one— —and a translucent blue window snapped into existence in front of his face. WELCOME, PLAYER… INITIALIZATION… INITIALIZATION COMPLETE. His heart slammed against his ribs. “What the—?” His voice echoed, swallowed almost immediately by the void. He waved his hand, and the window followed his movement, hovering obediently. The letters were crisp, impossibly sharp, like they were etched directly into his vision rather than floating in front of him. “Quite the dream…this is new. Did Barry give me something.” He tried to pinch himself. Pain bloomed—real, sharp, undeniable. Another window appeared beneath the first. WORLD SELECTED: THE ELDER REALM STATUS: UNBOUND PROCEED TO CHARACTER CREATION? [YES] [NO] A laugh escaped him, shaky and disbelieving. “There’s no way…this is great. Thanks Barry.” PROCEED TO CHARACTER CREATION? [YES] [NO] He glanced around again, searching for edges, seams, something that screamed simulation. Instead, the embers continued their lazy drift, pulsing faintly as if responding to his presence. He had played games his entire life. MMOs, RPGs, sandbox survival games—he knew interfaces when he saw them. He thought of the dream, although the realism was different. ADAPTIVE LANGUAGE: INITIATED “Hello player, I am Velier, would you like to proceed to Character Creation? Please respond Yes to proceed or No for release. He thought hard that this was surely not real and then gave up. “Hello Velier, sure why not, never had an interactive dream before.” “Hello player, I am Velier, would you like to proceed to Character Creation? Please respond Yes to proceed or No for release. Swallowing hard, he reached out and pressed [YES]. The void flared with light. The darkness shattered into motion, colors streaking past him like he’d been fired through a tunnel of flame and starlight. Heat washed over his skin—not burning, but warm, alive. Symbols and sigils spiraled around him, too fast to read. Then everything stopped. He stood on a circular platform of black stone veined with glowing cracks, molten light pulsing beneath the surface. The embers now formed a slow orbit around him, like a crown of fire. “Ok…what was it…Venny? Who are you again, this seems too real. Venny…ummm Voltron? Hello?” A new interface unfolded, larger and more detailed than before. CHARACTER CREATION SELECT ORIGIN • [Human] (Adaptive) • [Elf] (Arcane Affinity) • [Dwarf] (Endurance) • [Beastskin] (Instinct) • Other Origins Locked “Okay,” he muttered. “Definitely a game…but real? Voltron, where are you? No wait, Velier, where are you?” “Hello player, what assistance do you require? Would you like me to instruct you on Origin Selection?" “Velier, is this real…like am I actually in this game or is this a dream?” “Hello player, you have been selected as an secondary participant in The Elder Realm, cerebral symbiosis has been initiated. You responded [YES], you have confirmed your selection in The Elder Realm.” “Wait…I don’t want to continue, I want out. This is crazy, I want to talk to my lawyer. BARRY…did you do this to me! Hello…Velier, seriously I want out!” He uncharacteristically screamed, confusion and concern overtook him. He calmed down, refusing to let this bother him. “Hello player, you have been selected as an secondary participant in The Elder Realm, cerebral symbiosis has been initiated. You responded [YES], you have confirmed your selection in The Elder Realm.” His thoughts began to swirl, his out of body experience actually became an out of body experience. He envisioned himself floating above his game body and his game body floating above his real body comfortably sitting at his desk. “Velier, this is just a game right? Like…if I die here the game just stops yes?” “Hello player, cerebral symbiosis has been initiated. Death in game will result in death in The Outer Realm.” ”Ok…so I wont die in real life, just in this Outer Realm?” His fear subsided, waiting for a respond. “Hello? Velier?” He paused, concerned about what The Outer Realm meant. “Hello player, cerebral symbiosis has been initiated. Death in game will result in death in The Outer Realm.” He thought to himself, he was not put at ease as he had initially hoped. “VELIER! Please tell me if The Outer Realm is just some stupid name for the real world? For my world!” “Hello player, cerebral symbiosis has been initiated. Death in game…” He abruptly yelled over the voice inside his head, “Yes, I know death in game will result in death in The Outer Realm! You already told me this…this is ridiculous. Umm…lets see, Menu, I want to see the Menu.” He searched the prompt, focused on quickly removing himself from his current predicament. “Velier, show me the menu and setting…no, no I want to see account settings.” “Hello player, MENU is currently unavailable at your level. MENU will be available as you progress through the game.” “What is the world! Velier, I want out of this game, I want out right now. Take me home, I want to talk to the dev, anyone! I want out!” “Hello player, cerebral symbiosis has…” He cut off the voice, “REMOVE ADAPTIVE LANGUAGE NOW!” Nothing happened, he waited, standing in character creation just waiting. The embers continued to quickly pass by him, circling perpetually around his body. Finally he drew the courage to speak, “Velier, what do I do next?” No response came. “Velier, what do I DO NEXT!” Still no response. The interface continued to gnaw at him, unable to swipe it away. “Fine, whatever, Ill pick elf, make me an elf.” Again, nothing happened, he lifted his right hand and pressed [ELF] with his right pointer finger. He felt his body grow, sliming but feeling a power, some sort of innate strength. He hovered over the option again, and a tooltip expanded. [ELF] (Arcane Affinity): • Increased Arcane growth • Increased Arcane resistance • Innate Elemental Affinity His gaze flicked to the swirling embers around the platform, their glow reflecting off the stone. “Yeah… that’s fine, I guess it’s too late now” he said, concerned that he did not evaluate the other options. The selection locked in with a soft chime. ATTRIBUTE ALLOCATION AVAILABLE POINTS: [10] • Strength • Agility • Vitality • Intelligence • Willpower • Charisma He frowned. “Only ten? Is there not some sort of cheat code. Velier, give me 99 attribute points!” Another tooltip appeared, unprompted. NOTE: Attributes increase naturally through leveling, training, and combat. Initial allocation defines early survivability and growth path. He’d never been a frontline fighter in games. He preferred spells, control, damage from a distance. The table updated quickly. ATTRIBUTE SUMMARY AVAILABLE POINTS: [10] • Strength: 1 • Agility: 3 • Vitality: 2 • Intelligence: 3 • Willpower: 2 • Charisma: 2 Intelligence was obvious. He slid three points into Intelligence. A warm sensation spread behind his eyes, like a fog lifting. Willpower next—mana control, mental resistance. Two points. That left five. He hesitated, then spread one point between Vitality and Agility, with a single point begrudgingly placed into Strength. ATTRIBUTE SUMMARY AVAILABLE POINTS: [2] • Strength: 2 • Agility: 4 • Vitality: 3 • Intelligence: 6 • Willpower: 4 • Charisma: 2 “What a mistake…im going to die. Velier, hook me up with those 99 attribute points!” he said. “Classic mistake, this is a disaster. So two left.” The system didn’t respond. “Fine…just put the rest in Intelligence.” ATTRIBUTE SUMMARY AVAILABLE POINTS: [0] • Strength: 2 • Agility: 4 • Vitality: 3 • Intelligence: 8 • Willpower: 4 • Charisma: 2 The platform shifted, and runes rearranged themselves into a new pattern. CLASS SELECTION AVAILABLE CLASSES: • Warrior • Rogue • Ranger • Mage • Advanced Classes Locked His pulse quickened. [Mage]. He selected it without hesitation. The world reacted. Flames erupted from the cracks in the platform, spiraling upward before stopping inches from his skin. They didn’t burn. They welcomed. A deeper presence stirred, like something ancient had turned its gaze toward him. MAGE SELECTED. SUBCLASS SPECIALIZATION AVAILABLE. The interface expanded again, revealing elemental symbols rotating slowly in a ring. • Fire • Water • Air • Earth • Arcane (Locked) • Void (Locked) Fire pulsed brighter than the others. He didn’t need to think about it. Fire meant power. Destruction. Light in the darkness. It was the element of change—of burning away the old to make room for the new. It was also the one that scared him the least. He reached out. “Maybe this will keep my alive.” The moment his finger touched the [Fire] sigil, heat surged through his body. Not pain but a sense of recognition. The embers around him flared, their orbit tightening until they collapsed inward, sinking into his chest. He gasped, dropping to one knee as something ignited inside him. FIRE MAGE SPECIALIZATION CONFIRMED. A cascade of notifications flooded his vision. SKILL ACQUIRED: Ember Spark (Active) SKILL ACQUIRED: Heat Sense (Passive) TRAIT GAINED: Kindled Soul – Fire spells cost less mana when cast consecutively. He sucked in a breath and stood slowly, hands trembling. When he raised one, a tiny flame flickered to life above his palm—no interface, no prompt. Just will. He stared at it, awe stealing his breath. “This is real,” he whispered. The flame responded, growing brighter. A final window appeared, larger than all the others. CHARACTER CREATION COMPLETE. WARNING: Upon entry into The Elder Realm, death carries consequences. Pain is real. Choices are permanent. “Wait…what about my appearance? If I’m going to die or not I want to see what I look like. Ugh, fine Begin Adaptive Language.” “Hello player, my name is Velier...” “Yes, yes, can I change my appearance Velier?” “Hello player, appearance can be changed in game at any Clothier. You may not change your appearance during Character Creation.” He sighed, “Fine, whatever.” The prompt shone bright before his eyes. ENTER THE ELDER REALM? [BEGIN] His fear finally caught up with him. “Velier, are you sure I cannot get out of the game now?” “Hello player, cerebral symbiosis has been initiated. You are unable to leave game.” This wasn’t just a game. Games didn’t warn you like that. He thought of his old life—unfinished coffee, glowing monitor, the ordinary safety of a world that made sense. Then he looked at the fire dancing in his hand. At the power waiting to be learned. At the unknown stretching before him. He pressed [BEGIN]. The platform fell away. Fire and light swallowed him whole. And somewhere deep within The Elder Realm, the first ember of something far greater was born. “Hello player, my name is Velier, I will be your assistant and guide as you attempt to navigate the beautiful world we call The Elder Realm. May I know your name?” “Um, my name…my name is Stanley Bramkis.” “Hello player, would you like to use the name Stanley Bramkis?” “No…no I would not. I never wanted to be called that. Lets see, oh yea, call me Edin Vale.” “Hello player, would you like to use the name Edin Vale?” “Yes, and stop saying ‘hello player’ every time you address me…please.” “Edin, welcome to The Elder Realm.”
